To be specific, Baby Boomers are people born during the demographic Post-World War II baby boom during the years 1946 and 1964. Recently, LatinTRENDS was invited to a special luncheon for members of the Hispanic media hosted by AARP, the organization that represents the Boomers to give us an idea of what they’ve been up to. And it’s allot! The event was held at Pampano Restaurant in Midtown Manhattan and it gave members of the Hispanic media an opportunity to mingle with New York State AARP representatives.
The three national representatives then took the floor. Beth Finkel, State Director, AARP, Yvette Martinez, Associate State Director AARP and Lorraine Cortez-Vazquez, Vice President Multicultural Markets and Engagement gave us many reasons why adults 50+ should look to AARP for support in many areas of their lives. What’s on Boomers minds? Plenty.
EMPLOYMENT! Just because you reach retirement age doesn’t mean you have to stop working or living a full life. Finding employment after 50 can be difficult. This was not mentioned at the luncheon, but every year, AARP publishes the 50 Best Employers for Workers over 50. You can see list of the companies who made the cut on their website and if you are looking for a job, it’s a great place to begin your search.
Other issues that are huge for those 50+ are: affordable housing, financial stability in retirement, independence, caregiving and much more. According to the organization, 61% of Hispanics are concerned about discrimination; 19% are unemployed and looking for work; 67% say lack of affordable housing is a major problem and 45% are caregivers. AARP has information that is helpful for these areas as well as many others. A quick search of their website will reveal much helpful information.
AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that provides valuable information and guidance to help 50+ Hispanics stay abreast of important issues affecting them. If it’s important to you, it’s important to them. Their motto is: “To serve, not to be served.” If all of this sounds too serious, why not have some fun too! No todo en AARP es trabajo. Los socios disfrutan de peliculas gratuitas y tambien tienen descuentos para asistir a eventos culturales y deportivos. Discount tickets for the New York Yankees or the Mets anyone? AATP offers many other discounts as well. What you don’t know about AARP will surprise you. Why not visit their website and get acquainted? www.aarp.org.
