Business expands on a much broader level than just owning a small business or making an exchange of a good and service. When a person is dealing with state, local, federal and international business level, several more issues come up and need to be addressed. The discussion, Doing Business in Brazil, was presented with a PowerPoint presentation, venn diagrams and different scenarios to make the information easy to understand and show what was happening both in and around the country. The overall goal of the seminar was to discuss issues in Brazil about the corporate, tax, and labor and social security on a global level and it was hosted by Latham and Watkins LLP on March 14, 2013.
The speakers on the panel brought extensive knowledge about several topics that were discussed including international investments, due diligence, convergence, labor due diligence, benefits, various scenarios, structure investments, and dispute revolution.
Each speaker gave their own perspective on what was working and not working with each topic, but also try to give a point of view on what they felt was important doing business with Brazil. There was also some discussion about the timing for certain laws, such as, the statue of limitation, and for the attendees to understand that some laws, or transactions for instance, needed to be done in a timely manner. When doing business with any country on a global level, is to understand the laws, the contracts and the regulations for that country to avoid international lawsuits. Business is done through a two-way street and making relationships, while understanding the laws, only makes an exchange that much better.
