Enjoy these beautiful fall days as the cool breeze of New York City blows through your face and you are whizzing by people on your awesome looking skateboard. Wait, did I say skateboard? Yes, skateboard. How many out-of-shape and overweight skateboarders have you seen recently or ever? You might have seen them once or twice but not often. That’s because skateboarding is a great cardio exercise that burns fat and calories while developing your core muscles. Skateboarding will workout your butt, I mean the gluteus muscle, abs, legs and back.
As much fun as skateboarding is for children and teens, it is also an enjoyable and vigorous workout for adults. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention declares skateboarding as a moderately intense aerobatic activity. Many researchers have compared skateboarding to cycling, jumping rope and jogging. Dr. Michele Olson told Men’s Fitness that even if the skateboarder isn’t doing any tricks, just pushing the skateboard around can “accelerate your cardiovascular system and burn between eight and an impressive 12 calories per minute,” depending on speed. Olson continues to say that maintaining balance on the board is a great workout for the hamstring, quads, glutes, lower back and abs, reports Men’s Fitness.
But before you jump on a skateboard just know and understand that there are a variety of skateboards for the different types of skateboarding activities. One of the most popular skateboard activities is for tricks, which are seen on sports channels. This style of skateboarding is for semi-pro and professionals. The wheels for these skateboards are usually small and have a soft rubber for greater bounce. Skateboards for cruising have different board sizes but usually have larger wheels for a faster speed. The longboards, which mimics the appearance of a surfboard, is the new crave. But the pennyboards (a very small board) are gaining in popularity. Nevertheless, skateboarding is a great and fun exercise for all.
