Back in November, WABC-TV meteorologist Heidi Jones made a complaint against the Central Park Police Precinct when two uniformed officers failed to take a report. According to Jones, while she was jogging through the park, a Hispanic man had tried to rape her. The rape never happened and was, in fact, a fabricated story.
The November complaint came after Jones reported to police that the same Hispanic man who allegedly attempted to rape her came to her Manhattan apartment and threatened her. According to a source close to the New York City Police department, Jones received an apology from Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly for the officers’ inaction and received a small squadron of Special Victims Unit detectives for security, who acted as Jones personal chauffeur, according to an article in the Daily News. Six detectives were reported to have taken Jones to wherever she needed to go, from a flea-market at Union Square, restaurants, even when she was a fill-in for Good Morning America. It was during these times Jones was being driven around by the detectives that suspicion aroused around her claim.
Aside from her vague story constantly changing, Jones drew further suspicion when she avoided interviews with both Internal Affairs detectives and Manhattan prosecutors of the district attorney’s office. With her story being inconsistent and with no discovered footage to corroborate her story, Jones was questioned once again and confessed to making the up the whole story.
Jones started working for WABC-TV back in 2005. Since confessing to making up these claims, she has been suspended indefinitely and the station has planned to start its own internal investigation into the arrest. Jones is expected to be back in court on January 5th and, if convicted, she will face up to a year in jail for filing a false report and leading detectives on a search for a man who doesn’t exist.
