“I think young people feel completely disconnected and untaken care of, and they are. They don’t feel like they don’t have anyone that has their back…They go to school–the ones that are driven–go college, get a degree, and then there’s no jobs. I have all this debt and now what?” In a video for an organization named OUR TIME, Jessica Alba expresses her concerns for young Americans and their future in the country.
Taking to her Huffington Post blog, Actress Jessica Blog also expresses her concerns awaiting young Americans including her two daughters, “I want my girls to grow up in a world where they can pursue their dreams, build the career they imagine and ultimately have more opportunities to succeed than generations past. But with today’s economic climate, I see the challenges young Americans currently face.” And the bleak future she believes awaits the future American generations has Alba joining other celebrities in trying to change that.
In a new partnership with OUR TIME, an organization which advocates for the rights of young Americans, in association with ServeNext.org Alba along with other celebrities are trying to push for the creation of one million new national service jobs to be established with the United States. The one way these jobs can be created in order to provide employment for future Americans is for citizens to sign a petition on the organization’s site before Election Day.
Using influential figures in the country today OUR TIME Co-founder, Matthew Segal said his selection of Jessica Alba was due to her being “an excellent role model because she is someone who is self-made. She is using her privilege and voice to give back.” Segal goes on to add that Alba is “tough, smart and outspoken and is willing to stand up for her generation.”
The goal of attaining one million signatures for the organization would be pivotal to achieving OUR TIME’s purpose. While on The Dylan Ratigan Show on MSNBC, Segal stated that the collected signatures would present a large constituency in support of what they are aiming to do and would motivate politicians to listen because they are accountable to the people. “The candidates have to come to us and say, ‘If we ignore you, we are blatantly ignoring the interest of our constituents,” said Segal.
OUR TIME is trying to get a jumpstart on where America is going. With the growth of the country and it’s shifting around of its citizen the country is become far more diverse each and every day, and will continue to do so. “The young generation is the most diverse generation, and we are hoping to target multicultural generations,” said Segal, “Unemployment is generally higher for young people, as well as Latino and African Americans.”
In a video and public service announcements, Alba as well as other stars like Larry David, Usher, Trey Songz, Nas and Rachel Zoe encourage young fans and viewers to sign the petition and to vote in this upcoming election in order to get a start on making changes for their future. “While creating these opportunities is not the only answer to the social problems we face and it might not be the perfect solution, I do think it is one step we can take together to improve,” Alba stated in her blog.
