The importance of social networking cannot be overlooked, especially for artists who do not live in the elite houses of the music business. This does not mean that artists cannot generate numbers equal to these talents. For example, young Columbian artist Maluma just reached the three million mark on Instagram. He is the first Latin male artist to do so.
He also is extremely popular on other sites as well. The numbers list 12 million followers on Facebook, 1.7 million on Twitter and over a million subscribers on his YouTube channel.
“Social media is very important to me because it allows me to have a constant connection and ongoing communication with my audience.”
said Maluma, a winning coach and host of “La Voz Kids Colombia.”
“Even when I am extremely busy I make it a priority and that attention and dedication is given back to me by the fans day after day.”
Its paying off in other ways as the 21 year old won the 2014 MTV Millennial Award as Artist of the Year for Colombia and the 2014 Kids’ Choice Award for Favorite Colombian Artist or Group. He is working on his second album under the Sony Music US Latin Label called “Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy” due out mid 2015. This allusion to a duel side to the young star has made him a favorite with a new generation of fans that tout his songs as anthems for their era.
Maluma, who uses the first two letters of his mother, father, and sister’s names, has dominated his own nation as well as South America. He is also eyeing his release as a chance to grow into a worldwide artist. He knows where the source of support lies and he keeps it well in mind.
“It is something reciprocal and very special that we have and I’m very grateful to them.”
