What Marlen Esparza tried to accomplish in two Olympics was acquired with the stroke of a pen. Esparza struck gold yesterday with the announcement that Golden Boy Promotions signed their first woman boxer.
Esparza has been the first in a lot of ways since she started donning the gloves of the sweet science. She was the first American woman to appear and win a boxing medal in the Olympics. She was the first woman boxer to gain an endorsement deal with CoverGirl cosmetics among many others. Now she is the first to ply her trade in the professional ranks for Oscar de la Hoya’s promotion.
“I recently told my fans that I was going pro, and I am happy to announce that it will be the world’s best promotional company-Golden Boy Promotions,” Esparza excitedly proclaimed.
Marlen understands why she stands at the front of the line ahead of other female boxers who are equal in talent but lack the personality to tickle the fancy of mainstream America. But she knows this is both an opportunity and a commitment. Oscar de la Hoya knows personally how talent draws money when you can present it in an attractive package.
“Before she ever steps into the ring as a professional, Marlen Esparza has already established herself as a rising star,” Oscar de la Hoya pointed out.
Esparza, 27, will be looking to reach the pinnacle once more and knows that her signing is a promise to perform. She is the face of the women’s division for Golden Boy Boxing and she will either take the promotion to new and more diverse heights or fall mightily in the attempt. There is no middle ground in the professional game.
“I am excited to get back into the ring as soon as possible and start climbing the ladder towards winning a professional world title,” Esparza explained.
Marlen signed a multi-year deal which does offer her the necessary time to prepare properly and not rush her moves. “We pride ourselves on developing fighters and transforming them into the best of the best,” De la Hoya said. That’s what Marlen has been aiming for the start. She has been number one in every area until the Olympics. Now she embarks on a new journey.
“This is something I feel I deserve. I am so ready for this. I’m not scared, I’m ready,” Esparza revealed.
Now she looks to erase that memory and replace it on her mantle with a professional championship belt. That would finally complete the attire that is worn by Marlen Esparza.
