Ok, so the greatest advice given by New York State’s acting health commissioner on how to protect yourself against Ebola is (drum roll please)… keep your hands sanitized and get a flu shot. What?
During Governor Andrew Cuomo’s press conference, Dr. Howard Zucker suggested using hand sanitizers often and taking flu shots, which will help New Yorkers fight contamination. But this is New York. Living in this city should prompt you to maintain clean hands at all times anyway.
“No New Yorker should be concerned if there is a case of the Ebola virus,” Cuomo said. He assigned eight New York hospitals to be prepared in case an outbreak occurs. “We want caution, but we also want to keep perspective,” said Cuomo.
The Ebola crisis continues to get worse in West Africa as many countries are taking precautions. Caribbean and Latin American leaders are expected to meet in Cuba to discuss preparedness strategies for possible Ebola cases. Hopefully, it is not to discuss what type of hand sanitizer to use, even though water and soap is more effective (just saying).
Leaders from Cuba, Dominica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, the Grenadines, Antigua, Barbuda, Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Nicaragua will meet on Monday in Havana.
Cuba has already sent a medical team of doctors and nurses to West Africa to help fight the crisis. The US said the Cuban medical support is “welcomed”.
Unfortunately the Ebola outbreak has claimed almost 4,500 lives. In Brazil and Chile suspected cases were soon discovered to be false.
