It is no secret that the way we get our news today is through multiple mediums, yes, multiple mediums. Some still prefer the digital version while others prefer the print. But that should not matter because people are still getting the news about the world, some way, somehow.
With the newspaper industry drastically changing, there is no question that people are losing their jobs unfortunately, daily, weekly, and monthly are turning over more quickly and what seemed like a great career, is now taken over by the digital world. As an alternative, some people take a positive approach and become an entrepreneur. This is not to say ever should do it, but some people believe so much in their career, they do everything to find a way to keep it alive. Really, it is about believing in what you do and taking it as far as you will allow it.
This idea is what happened to Javier Castaño, former reporter of El Diario La Prensa and former editor-in-chief of Hoy Nueva York, decided to turn publisher to start Queens Latino after the fall of Hoy Nueva York. Queens Latino is an online news outlet focusing on the Queens Spanish speaking community.
Castaño realized there was a need for this market and almost 30% of the Queens borough is of Hispanic or Latino decent. Furthermore, he is portrayed as a pioneer for local journalism and innovative business model.
What he is doing is not only ambitious but realizing the needs of the people as opposed to thinking as a whole.
Today, many companies are thinking that a product or service will benefit everyone, but that is not nearly the case. It should be about targeting a specific market and going your product from there. Response to a specific market can go as high as you want it to because the people will be more accepting to the product or service because it pertains to them.
