Thursday morning I was able to sit in and participate in a discussion at the Mayor’s Roundtable. Mayor Deblasio was accompanied by his lovely wife Chirlane Mccray. Mayor Deblasio greeted and thanked everyone for coming and stated this will be the first of many events.
The discussion quickly started with Mayor Deblasio stating the importance of maintaining a connection to your ethnic roots. First Lady Chirlane pointed out that the community we have to set higher standards and goals for our children. The mayor then introduced the new commissioner for Immigrant Affairs which evolved into a long discussion focusing on Arab, Indian and Asian issues. Some labor questions were also answered, particularly Sick Leave policies, and Small Business Fines were also briefly discussed.
The roundtable discussion was rounded off with a variety of topics including, Municipal ID Cards, Cabinet Diversity, and of course, the effects of gentrification. Overall the roundtable discussion addressed many of the issues us New Yorkers have wondered about but I am hoping Mayor Deblasio to acknowledge and discuss the Latino community.
