As part of the Sunday Cinema series at La Casa Azul Bookstore, the movie that was featured this past Sunday was Before Night Falls, starring Reinaldo Arenas. A crowd of about 20 people gathered in the basement to enjoy the movie with snacks that were provided. The attendees seemed to be very excited for the movie and a lot of them seemed to have known each other prior to it.
The movie was presented in English with some of it in Spanish, though the English subtitles were provided. From watching the entire movie, the story line was historically correct and the scenes were not overdone with acting yet able to show what happened during this time period for most of us that may have never lived through it.
Some people will try to decide whether the book is just like the movie or if one of them is better than the other. For a book to made into a movie, it would be hard for the director for several reasons. One, is that they would have to read and understand what the book is about; two, they would have to get it historically correct to the time period so that the things that happened in that era, actually did happen and three, they would have to find a cast that fit the description of the characters in the book, to the point where the readers would understand the character in full. It is really up to the person on how they feel whether the book and the movie are similar, but it does create a great discussion among friends, especially for movie buffs.
