Romeo Tonight on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon.

Romeo jimmy fallon

The King of Bachata, Anthony “Romeo” Santos will be making his debut tonight on “The Tonight Show” Starring Jimmy Fallon.

For those Latinos who are not familiar with Jimmy Fallon, he has to be the funniest TV host I have ever seen on late night TV. This Emmy Award and Grammy Award winning talent is what late night TV should be all about. His comedic performance is hysterical! It comes naturally to him like it comes naturally for me to watch his show. His promotion of diversity in culture awareness with music, politics and every day situations that occur in celebrity lives shows his daily viewers they can relate to our insanities. From his titillating thank-you notes to foods, footwear and franchises, it just relives moments of fun moments we get annoyed about through the day.

Fallon began his TV career with “Saturday Night Live” in 1998, where he quickly became an audience favorite. And why not? Have you seen his smile? Not for nothing, but just looking at him laugh at his own skit-takes makes me laugh too.

Tonight is a night of TV for me. From The 15th Annual Latin Grammy’s on Univision and TNT to Jimmy Fallon on NBC for Romeo’s debut. I will be having my remote in one hand and cell on the other, tweeting away.

I’m Livin’ La Vida Loca for Ricky!

Ricky Martin
been considered to be one of the Latin music industry’s hottest commodities. The obligations of Martin as a father to twins, Matteo and Valentino, his busy work schedule, I don’t see when he has the time to become available for himself.

When he is free he loves to be at peace. In a tranquil atmosphere and partaking in exclusive beauty treatment. Enduring a deep pampering with a facial mask, and a purification moisturizer on his lips and hands are just a few of his masculine routines Ricky embarks in to please not only himself but his fans.

What can we say about Ricky. His debonair facial expressions and piercing eyes are just the beginning of what we begin to fantasize about seeing him on stage. Can you relive in your mind his sexiness at the World Cup? Can you feel the sweat? I don’t care if its sweat, its Ricky’s! Every choreographed step whether ‘PG’ or ‘R’ made me want to be on stage so he can sing to me ‘She Bangs‘ after the world cup that is.

From his stardom in Menudo, Ricky has always had this aura that made him stand out from the rest of the talented artists in the group. Whether it was his vocals or the way he would caress his hair when it would go into his eyes, his touch became magnetic. His successful career as an entertainer, ambassador, entrepreneur, actor and also being a devoted father is truly commendable and his look is scrumptious to his fans.

Although it remains to be seen whether all his desired wishes came true for Ricky; to have the body of a Greek God and face of an angel, I can testify that his spectacular silhouette is something I think even his shadow will envy.

Puerto Rican Heritage Celebration

I get asked about once a week “What are you?”. My immediate response is always “A human“. Which is questionable with how strange of a person I can be. I always know what they mean; I am a proud puertorican lady. I’m more Nuyorican than anything due to my Brooklyn up bringing and my fluency in Spanglish. My culture is an obvious part of my life when it comes to food, my love of salsa and how loud I speak when I’m hanging around my family. With all seriousness; knowing your culture is huge! My fellow Boricua’s and all other ethnicities looking to learn about different cultures; what better way to become more knowledgeable than this Puerto Rican Heritage Celebration at the Liberty Center in Elizabeth NJ tomorrow at 6 PM. Connection Productions and Danza Fiesta is offering live music, traditional Puerto Rican foods, art, story telling and a special performance by Danza Fiesta. This event sounds a lot more fun and interesting than those traditional history classes we sat through in school and it’s FREE! For more information call 908-249-5883.

Latino Celebrity Jennifer Lopez: The Comeback Plan

[Originally published in DTM Magazine Issue #68; May 2010]

Whenever one sits down with an interview with a woman known as “La Lopez” or-more infamously- “J-Lo,” one assumes that they are sitting down with a diva of epic proportions, one who rivals such unimonikered celebrities as Britney, Cher, and Madonna in terms of ego and diva-like demands. After all, there isn’t a music industry professional around who hasn’t seen her purported “Artist’s Rider” on The Smoking Gun.

In fairness-as this veteran of the music industry can attest-her rider, with the exception of the Diptyque candles (retail value: $60 per candle), doesn’t particularly stand out as excessively “diva-esque.” (The most notoriously excessive rider that I’ve seen belonged to-of all people-Fiona Apple, with DMX in close second…repaint the room, Fiona? Really?)

In actuality, however J-Lo really still is “Jenny from the Block.” When she speaks, you feel as though you’re talking to a typical Mom-effusive and glowing, with a sense of genuine love for both the Dad (in this case, Marc Anthony, her husband of six years) and the children (fraternal twins Max and Emme)- and not a superstar of international proportions. And this sense is equally disarming and refreshing.

Lopez is eager to talk about “The Back-Up Plan“, her first major film since 2006’s “El Cantante“, and I am happy to oblige her: “I remember watching it thinking that it was very funny but that if I had a tear in the end it would be really good, and it happened!”

In the film, Lopez plays Zoe, an unmarried woman who is desperate for a child. With no immediate romantic prospects on the horizon, Zoe is artifically inseminated with her best friend’s sperm. Newly pregnant, but not yet showing and still unaware of her new state, she meets Stan (Alex O’Loughlin), and the two start dating. Romantic complications-and side-spitting hilarity-ensue once she reveals to him that she was pregnant when they met.

This romantic comedy felt modern,” said Lopez, “in the sense that it refers to an in-vitro pregnancy. That’s not something you would have seen 20 years ago“.

Zoe is very strong, brave and independent; but in a very different way than I am, as she didn’t grow up with a family like I did. But precisely because I grew up with a lot of love, I also need it and rely on more people, whereas Zoe is strong enough to make the decision to have kids on her own. I don’t think I could do that.”

Lopez also speaks in glowing terms about her co-star, Alex O’Loughlin, the Australian actor who is perhaps best known for his role as Kevin Hyatt in FX’s “The Shield“:

Alex is awesome! It was his first romantic comedy and there was a freshness about him that was great. He also has a bit of an edge. I loved working with him and he is very good at what he does.”

Critics are already hailing The Back-Up Plan as a triumph: Kirk Honeycutt from The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a positive review, saying that Lopez gave “a winning performance.” But there is one co-star that may be giving Lopez a run for her money in the “star power” department: Nuts, the terrier dog with bat-like ears that swivel like satellite dishes, ever present throughout the film with an apropos inquisitive face. He’s already making the rounds on the press circuit, handing out his “pawagraph” to delighted fans in an effort to raise social consciousness on the family pets.

Lopez, however, is quick to divulge Nuts’ secret to success: “We had three of them [playing Nuts]. One was good at walking, the other was good at faces, and the last one had other talents. But they were all great at putting Nuts together.”

Nuts, actually is the basis for the deeper meaning behind the film: Zoe owns a “hip” Greenwich Village pet boutique called Hudson Mutts that caters to pet adoptions and enviornmentally friendly and healthy pet care. As Zoe’s dog, Nuts provided the inspiration to create a socially conscious pet store. “That says a lot about her,” said Lopez. “She didn’t enjoy being in the corporate world anymore, and wanted her life to have more purpose. I think Zoe is always searching for love, and having the pet store and Nuts helped her.”

Socially conscious pet stores, alternative methods of motherhood, superstar dogs, and nonstop wackiness: The Back-Up Plan is definitely not your typical romantic comedy! For Lopez, though a good romantic comedy is all about the journey: “We know how they start and how they end, so it’s the meat in the middle that matters. A romantic comedy has to be funny and make you think about life, but the obstacle that has to be overcome is the key. I like The Back-Up Plan because that obstacle isn’t typical.”

And neither, thankfully, is Jennifer Lopez.

Marc Anthony Performance Angers Baseball Fans

Marc Anthony

After singing “God Bless America” at an MLB All-Star Game Tuesday night Marc Anthony got attacked via Twitter. The New York native who grew up in Spanish Harlem sang the traditional song during the seventh inning stretch. Some tweets called him “un-American” and even questioned his citizenship. Others criticized his pronunciation, saying he rolled his r’s during the performance for the word “American.”

Fans of the the Grammy-winner were quick to defend the singer and clarify his Nuyorican roots.

Racially charged tweets and attacks started last month when 11-year-old mariachi singer Sebastien de la Cruz sang the National Anthem at three of the NBA Finals. Many said he was an undocumented immigrant when in fact he is a San Antonio native.

Jennifer Lopez Paid $1.5 Million To Sing

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez sang “Happy Birthday” to oppressive dictator Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow in Turkmenistan over the weekend. Little did JLO know the controversy she started with her rumored $1.5 million paid performance.

According to CNBC, China National Petroleum Corporation—parent of listed subsidiary Petro China—reportedly requested Lopez sing “Happy Birthday” to Turkmen President Berdimuhamedov during a concert in the former Soviet Republic. The President has been widely criticized for human rights violations. CNBC also states that according to Transparency International, only 6 countries in the world are more corrupt than Turkmenistan.

Lopez’s publicist says the event was researched by Lopez’s staff: “Had there been knowledge of human rights issues any kind, Jennifer would not have attended.” They also stated the last-minute request was made by China National Petroleum Corp. to Lopez and she “graciously obliged.”

Thor Halvorssen of the Human Rights Foundation told the Hollywood Reporter: “Lopez obviously has the right to earn a living performing for the dictator of her choice and his circle of cronies. But her actions utterly destroy the carefully crafted message she has cultivated with her prior involvement with Amnesty International’s programs in Mexico aimed at curbing violence against women.
