There are several reasons as to why but the main one is sedentary activities. There are a lot of shows for children on TV channels during summer vacation, especially on children’s cable networks such as the Disney Channel.
Unlike the past, there is a diversified way to escape from the hot weather due to the development of technology. People can turn on air conditioners and fans in order to avoid heat stroke. Furthermore, those who aren’t as mobile and don’t have the means of keeping cool 24/7, various public and community locations are usually available:

In comparison, Latin American summers are quite different. Seasons in southern South America is opposite to that North America. While it’s summer here, it’s winter in Argentina and Chile. So, in Chile, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day mark the initiation of summer vacation period.
South America meets Antarctica, therefore, while there are many mountains, valleys, tropical islands and deserts, there is no typical weather. If you want to travel to Latin America, you should bring long sleeves clothes to help prevent bug bites.
In Ecuador, interestingly, summer vacation varies, and because of its equatorial climate, schools run on two different calendars. In Mexico, there are three time zones: GMT-7 (Pacific), GMT-6 (Mountain) and GMT-5 (Central), and all of which go forward one hour in the summer for Daylight Saving Time (DST).
