A tradition of more than century old, the iconic dropping of the New Year’s Eve ball, makes its debut here on New Year’s Eve. Here is the breakdown of each aspect of the celebration taking place at Times Square in New York City.
Who’s Flipping the Switch?
This year, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, a Bronx native, will lead the 60-second countdown and pushing the button that descends the New Year’s Eve ball.
The Performers
Performers this year include Rodney Atkins, Icona Pop, Melissa Etheridge, Blondie, El Dasa, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and Miley Cyrus, Enrique Iglesias among others.
The Celebation
New York City is arguably one of the most popular cities to attend the New Year’s Eve Celebration, but the celebration continued in Miami, Florida, and Hollywood, California. Other performers in these areas included Pitbull, and Capital City.
Before the main event, there was a pre-show of the 30 greatest women in music. Their songs ranged from the 1970’s until now and included: Whitney Houston, Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys, Madonna, Beyonce, Rihanna and many many others.
The Ball
This amazing ball weighs almost 12,000 pounds and sits on top of One Times Square at 130 feet on a pole. There are about 2,600 Waterford crystals that formed a new design called “Gift of Imagination”. This year, the New Year’s Ball was designed by a sketch from a 12 year old cancer patient at Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Major news networks aired the iconic moment for the new year.
