The United Nations Foundation and Pharrell Williams has partnered with several online companies like Google, Pandora and MixRadio to campaign for a happier world that will fight against environmental crisis occurring around the world.
The campaign, which is part of the United Nations’ International Day of Happiness on March 20, will focus on climate change. Pharrell Williams and the UN Foundation is asking people to engage in social media with the hashtags #happyday and #happyplanet while also seeking 1 billion people to sign the Live Earth petition. The petition urges world leaders to “commit to tackling climate change by adopting a new global agreement on climate at the summit in Paris this December”.
“Climate change is a threat to many of life’s basic needs: water, food, shelter, and safety. When those needs are not met, economic, social and environmental crises get worse.”
Pharrell Williams on Friday, March 20, will light the Empire State Building yellow to honor the International Day of Happiness while inviting people around the globe to go now and join the world’s largest “Happy Party” that will raise awareness and demand climate action. People can join the Global Happy Party (globalhappyparty.com) by “uploading photos of themselves that will be transformed into an animated dancing image to the tune of Grammy award-winning song “Happy””. Using Google Maps people can see where in the world people are uploading their images.
The UN Foundation has created a 100-day marathon for social media users in 193 countries to share a picture of what makes them happy with the hashtags #happyday and #100happydays. The marathon, starting Friday, March 20, encourages everyone to find happiness in their lives for 100 days straight.
Meanwhile, Pharrell will continue to raise awareness by curating an exclusive mixtape for Pandora that will feature Daft Punk, Bjork, Michael Jackson, U2, and Weezer.
“Happiness may have different meanings for different people,” said the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. “But we can all agree that it means working to end conflict, poverty and other unfortunate conditions in which so many of our fellow human beings live. The pursuit of happiness lies at the core of human endeavors.”
