Veteran character actor and fan-favorite Luis Guzmán, star of numerous films including the upcoming “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” made a nostalgic ‘journey’ of his own to a former workplace earlier today while in town to promote the new 3D family adventure. Guzman, one of Hollywood’s busiest Latino actors, paid a visit to Henry Street Settlement, a social services center in the Hispanic-dominant Lower East Side of Manhattan, where he was employed before deciding to pursue acting full-time. Born in Puerto Rico, Guzmán grew up in Manhattan, graduated from City College, and worked as a youth counselor at the center while also performing in street theater and independent films.
As one of many stops on a cross-country tour to promote the upcoming New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. release, opening February 10th, Guzman dropped in on the staff and drama program participants of the center, offering them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet the actor, who graciously greeted fans and posed for pictures. He also treated them to a reading of selected passages from the classic Jules Verne novel, “The Mysterious Island,” which serves as inspiration for the new release, and donated 150 copies of the book to the center. Before departing, Guzmán took the time to autograph one special poster from the film for the center, which Henry Street Settlement will auction off to benefit their arts programs.
