Carlos Mencia is a Honduran-born comedian that doesn’t fear controversy and is willing to tackle any topic. From race, natural disasters and politics, no subject is left untouched.
I have little compassion for people in trailer parks who refuse to move after getting tornado warnings. How hard is it for them to relocate? Their house have wheels,” said Mencia.
More than anything in the world, the comic loves to make people laugh even if it makes them a little bit uncomfortable. He also seeks to uplift fans, like he did with one terminally ill cancer patient that forgot she was sick during one of his sets.
I am a product. . . . I’m a comedian. I’m not curing cancer. In the end, I tell jokes. I make people laugh. I make sense out of ridiculous situations, but in the end, it’s all about laughter. It’s all about your cheek hurting, your stomach hurting,” said Mencia.
In 2005, Mencia did find himself hurting by committing one of the cardinal sins of the comedy world, joke stealing. After many attempts to brush it off in interviews, the comedian finally confessed in the 2010 documentary “I Am Comic.”
I am proud I went through all of that. There were suicidal moments in those days, there were homicidal moments within those days. It’s not easy when you don’t have perspective and are going through all of this. There are billions of people, and everyone has an opinion; everyone has a filter. That has nothing to do with me. That’s the perspective this gave me.”
Since that nearly career-shattering period in his life, Mencia has reevaluated his life. He has decided to become healthier by dropping some weight, tell jokes that aren’t mean-spirited and most importantly come up with fresh material for his comedy sets. He now performs at intimate sets telling personal and observational jokes.
I have an opportunity to do something really amazing… I get the opportunity to become Carlos Mencia all over again. It’s a great place to be.”
Mencia is currently touring throughout the United States.
