Ricky Martin is being sued, yet again, for allegedly stealing song recorded for the 2014 World Cup.
According to the aspiring singer/songwriter Luis Adrian Cortes Ramos, the Puerto Rican superstar’s hit song Vida is nearly identical to a song he composed and submitted.
Prior to the 2014 World Cup (which was held in Brazil), Sony along with—Martin joining in—held a public contest titled “SuperSong” in 2013 which wanted young talented singers to submit their songs along with a music video that with the winning song becoming the FIFA World Cup of 2014’s anthem.
Now, the winner of the contest was announced as Elijah King, a Puerto Rican native as well, who is given credit as the writer of Vida which was re-recorded by Martin and featured on the World Cup’s album. However, Ramos is claiming he is the true winner.
As Ramos puts it he discovered the contest at the end of 2013 and participated in it—he even filmed the song’s music video in his hometown of Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico—and was eventually selected as one of the 20 finalists. But after receiving paperwork from Sony to sign—which he sent back, Ramos never heard from Sony or anyone until Martin’s Vida was released.
“Ramos was surprised, disillusioned and suffered mental anguish because the song was almost identical to the one he composed. Until that moment, Martin was an idol for Ramos,” so states Ramos’s lawsuit against Sony & Martin.
According to court documents, Ramos is seeking $10 million dollars; $1 million is for being “humiliated, ill-informed, harassed and threatened,” $2 million for copyright violation, $2 million for “severe mental anguish he has suffered and continues to suffer for loss of his composition and creation without being credited or compensated,” and the remaining $5 million for his right “to compensation for direct or indirect profits” that Martin may have received thanks to his—allegedly—song.
This is Ramos’s second attempt at a lawsuit. Back in July 2014, Ramos attempted to sue both Sony and Martin but it was thrown out of court so this time he is only going after Martin.
