With Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger being oust as judges on FOX’s reality competition X Factor the two vacant seats have been filled by Pop Queen Britney Spears and Disney Pop Princess Demi Lovato. Lovato inked the deal several days ago and currently joins Christina Aguilera of NBC’s The Voice and Jennifer Lopez of FOX’s American Idol as Latina judges appearing on primetime television.
Earlier this month, rumors were circulating about whom would fill-in one of the seats left open when Abdul and Scherzinger were let go from the show along with Britney Spears who was reportedly offered the seat back in April. One rumor in particular was that Miley Cyrus would be joining the UK spinoff show for its upcoming season. However, the seat was filled in by Cyrus’s fellow Disney alumni Lovato. A decision which has some questioning whether it was a wise decisions on the execs part.
“They’re looking for female pop singers who can engage a younger audience,” Senior Editor Monica Herrera of Rolling Stone commented. “Demi seems like a good choice because she hits not just music fans, but TV fans and I think they’re kind of trying to find somebody who can hit all angles.”
However, Keith Caulfield, an associate director of charts and records at Billboard, sees an possible issue with Lovato becoming a judge on the show, “I thought it was interesting choice just because, I mean, she is a star, but she seems a bit under the radar to a degree,” being popular with teens Lovato isn’t wildly known among adult audiences so there is a slight possibility how credentials to be on the show and her commentary when judging talent may not be accepted by viewers.
But there’s always a silver lining.
Caulfield adds that for Lovato’s appearance on X Factor could prove beneficial for her since “it’s going to elevate her visibility and give her a whole new audience and a great platform to introduce new material. I think it’s a great opportunity for her to really expand her fanbase. I think a lot of people are going to discover Demi for the very first time.”
Joining Cowell, Reid, and Spears, Lovato takes the seat as the fourth judge and is reported to earn 15 million dollars for her part in the show’s upcoming season. Lovato’s alleged $15 million dollar deal breaks Jennifer Lopez’s deal who is earning $12 million dollars for her judge position on American Idol. Auditions for the second season of FOX’s X Factor are expected to begin at the end of May.
Alongside her duties as X Factor judge, Lovato will tour this summer promoting and singing songs from her latest album Unbroken.
