Writer, director, producer and two time Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro won Best Animated Feature for his film “Pinocchio,” making him the first Latino to win an award for this this category.
Del Toro dedicated the award first to his wife, Kim Morgan, and co-director Mark Gustafson’s wife, Jennifer. He also thanked the cast and crew who worked very hard in the film. Adding that they “gave life, beauty, and truth to a tale about life, loss, and belonging.”
For del Toro, Pinocchio is a long-time passion project. He considers that no other character ever had such a deep and personal connection to him.
The Mexican filmmaker stated; Pinocchio was rejected by every major motion picture studio over the last 10 years before a streamer jumped on it.
“When we use Netflix as our authority for distribution, we ignore that Netflix is also an alternative for production,” . “This film went over 10, 15 years unproduced because all the major studios rejected it, but not Netflix, they said yes. So that is an argument for me – many films and series that wouldn’t have been greenlit are being greenlit on streamers, whether it’s Disney Plus, HBO Max or others and I find that interesting.” –said del Toro
This also marks the first time Netflix has won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature.
Backstage at the awards show, del Toro was asked by a reporter about the state of the movies, and he replied, “We’re on middle of transition and change and a crisis at the same time.
We just survived the transformation of delivery, the arrival of a pandemic and everybody thinks we should define where we’re going in a year or two.
It will define itself in the incoming decade. The most important thing is to keep the size of the idea big. We need some history to talk about the future of the big screen with a some certainty.”
The Golden Globe Awards, were not televised in 2022 because NBC canceled the awards show broadcast due to heavy industry criticism sparked by allegations against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) of corruption and the revelation that the organization had no people of color within their 87 members.
The Association responded by announcing the addition of 21 new members of diverse backgrounds.
