Miss Universe 2015 is Colombia—no, no Colombia did not take the 2015 crown, again. Sorry Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez-Arévalo, but Pia Alonzo Wurztbach of the Philippines is actually Miss Universe 2015.
If you haven’t heard—or seen it by now—this was just a loose interpretation of what happened last night during the crowning ceremony last night inside the Planet Hollywood Las Vegas Resort & Casino where the Miss Universe 2015 beauty pageant was being held after host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced Colombia as the winner.
After announcing Miss Colombia the winner, Gutierrez-Arévalo was crowned by reigning Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega, also Miss Colombia, and then performed the traditional wave to the audience, however her celebratory moment was cut short when Harvey came back on stage to deliver the awkward and devastating news.
“The first runner-up is Colombia,” Harvey announced, and that’s when things started to click that the crowned beauty queen was not the queen but the real winner, Alonzo Wurztbach of the Philippines, was standing crown-less. “Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines,”
“Listen, folks. Let me just take control of this,” Harvey added, and then showed the bewildered audience the card. “This is exactly what’s on the card. I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake.”
A pretty unusual mistaken considering the card clearer read Alonzo Wurztbach as the winner and NOT Gutierrez-Arévalo, so how is that a mistake? Possibly a bad and distasteful publicity stunt.
Anyway…
To make matters worse, the outgoing Miss Universe 2014 Vega had to remove the crown from her Miss Colombia sister and place it on the rightful winner.
In a released official statement, the Miss Universe pageant officials apologized to both finalists stating, “The excitement of live TV was evident tonight on the Miss Universe stage with over 10 million live fan votes tabulated,” pageant officials said, “Unfortunately, a live telecast means that human error can come into play. We witnessed that tonight when the wrong winner was initially announced.”
Taking to his Twitter, Harvey attempted to apologize for his “error” but that only made matters worse for him when he misspelled both Colombia and Philippines in the tweet, which has since been deleted.
Backstage, after be rightfully crowned the new Miss Universe called the whole affair a “very non-traditional crowning moment…It’s very, very 2015.”
The return of Miss Universe was suppose to go without any scandal considering it nearly didn’t happen after it’s former owner Donald Trump angered numerous networks for his remarks on immigrants in the United States; immigrants who he mostly identified as Latino. After a court battle and removal of anything Trump from the Miss Universe organization the pageant was picked up by new management and a new network.
