Rita Moreno, the trailblazing actress and first Latina to win an Academy Award, is being celebrated in a new way. Mattel has unveiled a Barbie doll in honor of Moreno’s upcoming 93rd birthday. The doll, part of the Barbie Tribute Collection, pays homage to her monumental contributions to entertainment and culture.

The design draws inspiration from the iconic gown Moreno wore at the 34th Academy Awards in 1962, the night she made history by winning Best Supporting Actress for her role as Anita in West Side Story. Moreno shared her hope for the doll’s impact in a statement:
“I was a girl who decided to go for it, and despite the challenges I faced, I never gave up on my dreams. I hope this doll inspires every girl today to live their life with courage and resilience to make their dreams a reality.”

Born in Puerto Rico in 1931 and raised in New York City, Moreno’s career spans over seven decades. After her groundbreaking Oscar win, she continued to break barriers by achieving EGOT status—winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. She remains a powerful force in Hollywood, championing authentic Latino stories and advocating for racial and gender equality.
Beyond her acting, Moreno’s legacy includes receiving some of the highest honors in the nation, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 and the Kennedy Center Honor in 2015. In 2021, her life story was chronicled in the documentary “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It,” highlighting her perseverance in overcoming racism, sexism, and personal struggles.

Mattel collaborated closely with Moreno to create a doll that reflects her likeness and celebrates her unparalleled achievements. “Rita Moreno has shattered stereotypes and barriers for Latinas in entertainment and beyond,” said Krista Berger, Mattel’s Senior Vice President of Barbie.

The Barbie Tribute Collection, which began in 2021, has previously honored women like Lucille Ball and Vera Wang. Moreno’s doll is available now on the Mattel website, ahead of her December 11 birthday. Reflecting on the honor, Moreno shared:
“I hope this doll serves as a reminder to embrace your limitless possibilities and pursue your passions—because when you do, you’re bound to go far.”
