For most living in a large city like New York City it may be hard to find others to connect to who share similar interests. With the expansion of the online world connecting us all and the creation of social media sites this hard find to connect has lessen some. Finding others who share common interests like going to the movies, eating cuisines, embarking on an adventure outdoors, or etc. is as easy as pressing the power button on your computer.
Utilizing Facebook to connect members of a community that may find it hard to connect with others in this city, one man from New York City has taken to the site to connect Mexicans living in the big apple.
Hoping to address the loneliness that some Mexicans may feel living in the city, Eduardo Peñaloza created the Facebook page entitled “Mexicanos en la Ciudad de Nueva York” hoping to connect and build a support network for Mexicans who can share their daily experiences, discuss mutual topics of interest, or merely develop one’s own personal social network.
“The project got started because we thought it was important to have a group where people could have conversations and share their experiences, paisano (Mexican) to paisano (Mexican),”
In-addition to Mexicans living in the city connecting with one another for social purposes, there’s also an element where the connectees can educate one another. According to Peñaloza, users who visit the page often help each other with coming to understand and grasp the English language.
“In the three years [since it got started], all of us in this online community have learned a lot. We want to have a variety of opinions, tastes, and preferences,” said Peñaloza, the page’s administrator and moderator. “To that end, we always give everyone a place [to speak their mind], and there’s a platform that lends itself to constructive discussion.”
Currently, the page has a total of 1,248 likes and has regular postings detailing various events and activities that Mexicans living in New York City may like to partake in in order to socialize with one another.
As technology continues to develop and the world of social media becomes widely used by all, the interconnecting benefit it holds is truly great. The use of such technological vehicles can lessen the isolation some may face because they’re either illegal citizens, socially avoidant, or simply they do not know how to connect with others.
