ZOE SALDANA TALKS ABOUT AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE

zoe-saldana-getty_t580

Zoe Saldana is doing well on the professional front. She is currently promoting the third installment of the current Star Trek film “Star Trek Beyond” opening in theatres today. Zoe reprises her role of Lieutenant Uhura. At 38, she is in the prime of her film career.

But a visit to the doctor revealed that she suffers from Autoimmune disease. Also known as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a condition that has effected both her mother and sister, Zoe has had to radically alter her diet.

The disease causes the immune system to turn on the thyroid which wrecks havoc on hormone production.

“Your body doesn’t have the energy it needs to filter toxins, causing it to believe that it has an infection,”

Saldana explained.

Now Zoe, along with her husband, eat only gluten and dairy-free foods. The quickness of the effect of the disease makes it necessary to change or suffer body breakdowns.

“You create antibodies that attack your glands, so you have to eat clean,”

Zoe pointed out.

For Zoe, the timing could not be better. She is entering a very busy period with the current Star Trek film and three future “Avatar” films in the works. But for Zoe, work is plentiful, but health is now the priority.

¡Feliz Pascuas!

Easter is a religious festivity and everyone celebrates differently. In the USA and around the world, Easter tradition is the Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ after Good Friday. Traditionally, children gather to hunt eggs. It is believed that the Easter Bunny is a rabbit-spirit and symbolizes fertility. USA Today stated, “Decorating eggs for Easter dates back to at least the 13th century, according to the History channel. Dying eggs red symbolized the blood of Christ.”

Yesterday celebrities celebrated Easter their own ways and shared those moments with us on social media!

Some celebrities posted a throwback picture of themselves hunting Easter eggs as children. On her official App, Kim Kardashian-West shared a picture of her father and two sisters Kourtney and Khloé. “Happy Easter Everyone! Easter has always been a big celebration in my family! I love this throwback of Kourtney, Khloé and me with our daddy in our yard. We had just finished an Easter egg hunt!,” said Kim.

Others celebrities cited from the Bible. The actress Melissa Joan Hart celebrated Easter and posted a picture with a biblical quote, “He has risen, as he said – Matthew 28.”

Kourtney Kardashian also took this moment to celebration to share words of reflection. From the book “Jesus Calling” by Sara Young, Kourtney posted content for March 27 of the book. Be still in My Presence, even though countless tasks clamor for your attention. Nothing is as important as spending time with Me….. Do not seek Me primarily for what I can give you. Remember that I, the Giver, am infinitely greater than any gift I might impart to you. Though I delight in blessing My children, I am deeply grieved when My blessings become idols in their hearts…

Many celebrities took their children out for hunting eggs. Zoë Saldaña, shared a pic of her twins Cy and Bowie.

Latinas Celebrate International Women’s Day

By Florentina Narchet

This past Tuesday March 8th was International Women’s Day.  Throughout history, women have been able to overcome many barriers imposed by society and unwrap in any given task…and that forward-thinking mindset is evident today, in the many innovative leaders that are within our communities.

Powerful Latinas celebrities gathered together to once again remark women’s accomplishments on National Women’s day and encourage and motivate other women.

Eva Longoria decided to celebrate this special day with a special person, her mother. Longoria uploaded a video to admire and honor her mother. In the 9-second video where her mother appears, Longoria described her mother as a strong and amazing woman.

La Diva Del Bronx, single mother of twins; Max and Emme, Jennifer Lopez is another Latina woman who joined to celebrate and empower the ladies on Women’s Day.  Lopez who was announced as the Global Advocate for Girls and Women by United Nations Foundation, celebrated the day by spreading the word of global gender inequality that still exist.

Jenny from the block who struggled as a woman but never gave up, encourages others to join and end the great disparity between women and men. She said, “I ask you to stand up for all girls and women this International Women’s Day. By 2030, we can make gender equality a reality.

With her Dominican and Puerto Rican roots, Hollywood actress, director, and mother of twin boys: Cy Aridio and Bowie Ezio, Zoe Saldaña also joined to celebrate International Women’s Day. On her Facebook, she posted a photo of three generations of women in her family, her sisters, mother and grandmother. She quotes, “Here’s to strong women, may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them”.

Sofia Vergara decided to celebrate the day by pointing out an article that describes the impact the non-profit organization, Give to Colombia is making. This organization works with the Colombian community and simultaneously helping one another to empower women; overcome stereotypes and help women achieve their dreams.

Zoe Saldaña upset over forgotten Nina Simone Biopic!

Zoe-Saldana-Independent-Spirit-Awards-2011

Zoe Saldaña is angry and upset that her Nina Simone biopic has yet to hit theaters after being completed nearly three years ago.

According to the 37-year-old actress, the reason no one has seen the controversial biopic is due to mismanagement and a lack of organization that surrounds the finalization of the movie. And Saldaña is not afraid of saying how disappointed she is with those who are a part of the project.

The people behind the project weren’t my cup of tea,” Saldaña said in an recent interview in-which the project was discussed. “The director (Cynthia Mort) was fine, but there was a lot of mismanagement, which is why we’re still here three years later. And I’m still trying to fight with everybody to get the movie finished. Nina deserves better.”

While the movie is in post-production limbo it was not without controversy prior to shooting. When Saldaña was cast as the prominent singer and civil rights activist there was a negative response to the casting. Although Saldaña is of Dominican and Puerto Rican descendant, some felt her casting in the role should have gone to a Black actress who could portray an important figure within the Black community.

However, despite the response to her casting the actress was unyielding to it and went through with the project.

I listened to her voice, to her tone. She was angry—and rightfully so. She was a black woman born ahead of her time. Her soul, her spirit was never able to accept or adapt to the heartbreaks that life was giving her.”

For the part, Saldaña stepped out of the spotlight generated by her part in the Star Trek and Guardian of the Galaxy movie franchises to immerse herself in the project.

I needed to walk her path. As a woman, it wasn’t difficult to empathize with another woman, but I needed to be very isolated,” Saldaña said, describing how important the role was for her. “I moved out of my house for three months. I wasn’t really talking to anybody that I knew. I just needed to be all things Nina. It was so intense, and everything happened really fast.”

Since completing the project, Saldaña discusses how Nina Simone seems to be haunting her.

To this day, I can’t listen to her music. I’ll be able to listen to her and not feel so heartbroken once I either finish this movie or release it, knowing that we did the best we could, or this movie goes away,”

And while Saldaña has expressed anger in the movie’s release, she would rather her film be hidden away just as long as someone does one thing in-regards to the film’s subject.

I pray that somebody tells her story, and they do it amazingly well. And then I’ll just put this to rest. But so far I’m still hanging in there with her. We’re still fighting together to tell it like it is. And that’s the best way to be.”

Not Going to Be Quiet: Zoe Saldana Speaks out on Sexism in Hollywood

rs_300x300-150608104818-600.zoe-saldana.cm.6815

Not one to shy away from calling out the sexism that exists within Hollywood, Guardians of the Galaxy & Star Trek star Zoe Saldana is currently revealing the sexism she has endured despite her continued success upon the big screen.

A producer once told me he hired me for the way I held a gun while wearing panties, not for my opinions,” said Saldana, referring to her 2011 hit action film Colombiana in-which she encountered a producer who offensively told her why she had gotten the role, “I wish I’d recorded it, so I could play it for every girl in elementary school and tell them never to let anybody treat them that way.

However, looks aside Saldana noted this wasn’t just one encounter but recalls other issues that has resulted in similar sexist issues.

Back in June, the 37-year-old Latino actress noted how her pregnancy had affected her career.

Let me tell you something, it will never be the right time for anybody in your life that you get pregnant,” said Saldana, describing how her pregnancy made a few in Hollywood panic and consider severing ties with her due to her being attached to several projects during her pregnancy.

I was like, ‘Oh, my God, are you kidding me? It’s this bad?’ Right when I just feel super-duper happy, is that inconvenient for you?” added Saldana, discussing her response to the reaction her pregnancy illicited, “That me, as a woman in my thirties, I finally am in love and I am finally starting my life? And it’s (screwing) your schedule up? Really?

But Saldana doesn’t just described the treatment she and possibly other women in Hollywood face. She also discusses the treatment male actors received and how it is vastly different.

According to Saldana, production studios will go out of their way to “spend more money sometimes ‘perking’ up male superstars in a movie,” and spend whatever amount of money to support male actors’ needs but for female actors…not so much.

But then a woman comes in going, ‘OK, I have a child. You’re taking me away from my home. You’re taking my children away from their home. And you’re going to make me work a lot more hours than I usually would if I was home. Therefore, I would have to pay for this nanny for more hours—so I kind of need that. And they go, ‘Nope, we don’t pay for nannies’,” explained Saldana, describing the disadvantage women within Hollywood face as opposed to their male counterparts.

While Saldana notes she’s faced some negative response due to her pregnancy, Saldana is still becoming a hot name in Hollywood. Saldana will reprise her role as Nyota Uhura in a third Star Trek movie, then she will portray Gamora in Marvel‘s <strong<Guardians of the Galaxy, and she will once again become Neytiri in James Cameron‘s Avatar sequels, which she will gladly tackle and devote her all to while being a new mother to twin boys.

Animated Film ‘The Book of Life’ Press Conference Featuring Channing Tatum

The Book of Life, produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez, is the story of Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. He embarks on an adventure that spans three fantastic worlds where he must face his greatest fears.

The film, written by 20th Century Fox, touches on the intricate themes of death, selflessness and more.

Joaquin, the heroic character Channing Tatum plays, is forced to recognize that to be a hero one must truly be selfless. To this point, I asked Channing if there has ever been a point in his career when he has been selfish. “Selfless or selfish?” he asked.

“Selfish…and perhaps learned to be selfless afterwards?” I added.

“Actually, when I was going to do Jump Street, I had just worked with Chris Pratt, and I looked at him when I was about to go do Jump Street. I looked at Chris Pratt and I go, Man, I don’t know how to tell you this, but I’m about to go do a movie I think you’d be way better for,” Channing chuckled.
“I guess that was my selfish, because I went and did the movie.”

When it comes to being selfless, it has taken Channing around three to four years to learn that as an actor, “You are not the story. The story is the story. The movie is the story.” While a lot of young actors tend to worry only about themselves, Channing suggests looking at the storyline as a whole and thinking of yourself (the actor) as just a part of it. This, in turn, will result in your best work.

Latino Star Zoe Saldaña: Unlimited Superstardom!

[Originally published in LatinTRENDS Magazine Issue #81; September 2011]

Latina-American actress solidifies her position as an actress, looks to the future as a director, producer, writer, and business woman.

You saw her start as a young girl in “Center Stage”, “Crossroads”, and “Drumline”.
You saw her mature into “Pirates of the Caribbean”, “Guess Who” and “The Terminal”.
Now, after “Avatar”, “The Losers”, and the upcoming “Colombiana”, you think, wow, what’s next>

LatinTRENDS recently, exclusively, spoke to Zoe about her expectation both in and out of film. During the course of our phone interview, Zoe spoke passionately of her plans and prospects…and it seems that the sky is the limit.
“In 10 years, I see myself both in front of, and behind, the cameras. I intend to continue acting, but I have the short-term goal to start directing and producing since my passion is this (film),” Saldaña said confidently.

Of Dominican & Puerto Rican descent, and full aware of her biculturalism, Zoe is now editing “Kaylie”, her first short film. The film is a reflection of children living in the element of challenge, rejected by society either because of racism, ideology, religion or physical limitations, “Glamour Magazine green-lighted a budget for me to make a short. I remembered the tensions experienced by my niece when she started school in Los Angeles. And I thought of the internal struggle that disabled children must have. Along with my sister (Cisely), I decided to make this film as attribute to children with autism,” she explained.

This is not Saldaña’s first experience behind the lens: she also served as associate director of the Vin Diesel project “The Ropes,” a web/internet series scheduled to debut in the fall.

WITH THE CORPORATE SUITS
As you can imagine, Zoe’s agenda is very full. Right now, she’s in the midst of doing publicity for her sure-to-be-blockbuster film “Colombiana,” the aforementioned “Kaylie” and is, of course, reading screenplays and scripts for upcoming shoots. Despite this busy schedule, she makes time for meetings with show executives for a business project that, according to her vision, filled a niche in the industry: “Fashionista.” “My Fashion Database (www.myfdb.com) is a concept of a platform on the Internet where you can find a designer, a model, a photographer or anything related to the world of design and fashion,” said Zoe, who has modeled for RocaWear, Calvin Klein, Dewar’s and Avon, among others.

A GOOD PHYSICAL REGIMEN
Working in films such as “Avatar,” “The Losers” and “Colombiana,” has been a real challenge for Zoe: she had to learn archery, martial arts, horse riding and even heavy weapons handling. “I’m no stranger to weaponry, since I come from a family of hunters, but the physical work I had to do in recent years was quite demanding on much of my body. After all, I am getting older,” said Saldaña, who recently turned 33 on her last birthday (this past June).
And the sepia-skinned actress does not want to be pigeon-holed into a character or stereotype, and ensures that her upcoming, selected projects are of equal or greater than any previous role. “The story is everything. If I like the script, I do not care about money. It’s art. If it’s good, do the movie. That’s been my policy of selection and I keep to it,” said Zoe, who is set to filming “The Words” in Canada, where she co-headlines the indie film with Bradley Cooper.

Upon completion of the interview, Zoe had a few words of encouragement & wisdom for the kids who are looking for a place in the bicultural and global society of today. “Focus, and find a mentor to follow. Find someone with principles and values to help you move forward. Have faith that dreams come true.

Because they actually do…and that, Saldaña has proven.

Latino Superstars respond to the death of Nelson Mandela

BawRJTjIAAAEwCU

Like wildfire, the word of Nelson Mandela‘s passing has spread quickly throughout the world. An immovable anti-apartheid revolutionist, caring politician, and devout philanthropist the death of Nelson Mandela has sent a mixture of shock, grief, reverence for a man who was born in South Africa but beloved everywhere because of his courage and devotion to aid those who cannot aide themselves.

As was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative election, he focused his time in office on dismantling the presence of apartheid that veined itself throughout the country and its government. Mandela fought and ended institutionalized racism, poverty and inequality, in the country while fostering racial reconciliation.

So it is not confusing why so many are impacted by his lost. President Barack Obama ordered that American flags be lowered to half-staff to honor Mandela which is a rare honor for a foreign leader. Meanwhile memorials to the former South African president have sprung across the United States.

3 Latina Actresses Grace Super Bowl Ads

This past weekend was all abuzz with Super Bowl XLVII (47) pandemonium which ended in the Baltimore Ravens beating the San Francisco 49ers 34-31, but today’s water cooler talk isn’t just about the game or Beyonce’s half-time performance. Aside from intense football and pulsating entertainment, Super Bowl Ads is just one of the three things being talked about today. And some of the ads contained appearance by three well-known Latina Actresses.

In a 30-second M&M commercial, the comedic red M&M is joined by Glee actress Naya Rivera, 26, who appears to have fallen in love with the tasty treat. However, their love is one based upon Rivera’s desire to eat him. In his grief, the red M&M belts out Meatloaf’s “I’d do Anything for Love (But I Won’t do That) eerily yet comically playing along to the scenario of his and Rivera’s love affair.

In another ad, Latina Actress Zoe Saldana of Star Trek and Avatar fame joins music legend Stevie Wonder for Bud Light. In the ad, Saldana and Wonder pose as magical beings sought out by two individuals hoping to have their chair (which they hauled across New Orleans) magically charged with luck in order for their team to win at a certain highly watched game.

And finally, along with an assortment of product ads there were special premiere trailers for soon-to-be-released movies. While a promo for Saldana’s Star Trek: Into Darkness was one of the talked about airings, twitter went into overdrive last night after an ad for the 6th installment of the Fast and Furious aired showing that one Michelle Rodriguez was returning to the film series.

Despite ad rates for the Super Bowl being generally pricey—this year for a 30 second ad space cost around $4 million—it is money well spent. The Super Bowl is one of the highest watched events that not only attract domestic viewers but also international watchers. The ads are necessary tools in generating a buzz that affects product and movie sales.

“The cost per minute is enormous, but studios obviously feel they are going to get the biggest bang for their buck,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a Hollywood.com box analyst, describing how Super Bowl is one place, “studios take the opportunity to plant the seeds of excitement of potential moviegoers for their biggest movies of the year.”

Let’s hope the ads worked since this year’s Super Bowl beat last year’s 47.9 viewing with a total of 48.1 rating according to the Nielson CO.
