While most are condemning him, Ugly Betty star America Ferrera isn’t attacking hotelier Donald Trump but thanking him for his recent derogatory comments on Mexican immigrants living in this country.
Since announcing his intention on running for the presidential nomination on behalf of the Republican party for the 2016 elections, Donald Trump has stirred quite a bit of controversy due to his very stereotypical and ignorant comments regarding immigrants in the country.
According to Trump, the United States of America has become a āa dumping ground for everybody else’s problems,ā and Mexican immigrants are to blame because when they enter the country they only bring their problems, drugs, crime and rape.
Because of his outlandish comments, Macyās, NBC Universal, and Univision decided to end any and all business association with Trump. However, in the storm of disapproval and anger there is one voice, one response, thatās taken a different tone to Trumpās remarks.
āThank you, Donald Trump!ā said America Ferrera, in an open letter addressed to Trump.
Although Ferrera also stated that Trump was āincredibly ignorant and racistā the open letter was mostly aimed at thanking the hotel giant for exciting the Latino community to want to get out and vote for someone who isnāt as ignorant, pompous, and still living in an outdated and bigoted America that no longerāand should neverāexist in the country today.
āWhat you just did with your straight talk was send more Latino voters to the polls than several registration rallies combined!ā wrote Ferrera, āThank you for that. Here we are pounding the pavement to get American Latinos to the polls, while your tactic proves most effective. Remarks like yours will serve brilliantly to energize Latino voters and increase turnout on Election Day against you and any other candidate who runs on a platform of hateful rhetoric.
The truth is, Mr. Trump, that your comments mean that you fail to see that immigrants are what have made this nation. They are at the core of our ideals, and they are the foundation that keeps us afloat. No, Mr. Trump, you may not reduce us to drug dealers and rapists. We are moms and dads, sons and daughters. We are valedictorians and honor students. We are college graduates, bankers, police officers, entertainers, teachers, journalists, politicians and we are the future of America.ā
Born of Honduran descent, the Los Angeles raised actress commented on this fear of change mentality that is gripping not only a few Americans but a great deal of members of the Republican Party.
With the Supreme Court’s decisions on same-sex marriage being acknowledged throughout the country, universal healthcare, as well as the outpouring demand that the Confederate flag be removed from outside the South Carolina statehouse being just several indicators that there is progress occurring in the country it has also allowed for the ugly side of what change can bring.
After the above mentioned indicators began to occur in the country, thereās been a growth in what can be described as a stalemate for some Americans refusing to accept these changes. Although the negative responses to change should not be focused upon, there is still a great deal of progress needed especially due to some responses to comments made by Trump.
While Trump continues to get negative responses for his statements, heās taken to his Twitter not to apologize for them but to retweet messages of support from his supporters and an article which notes that his is performing favorably in the national polls despite his comments.
Whether Trump truly believes in what he saidāwhich seems to be the caseāor heās even a greater fool trying to spur up support by rallying a group of people who blindly agree with his comments he shouldnāt be taken lightly. Trump and those like himāpeople in a position where they can attain an even greater significant positionāshould not be permitted to influence any part of government because it is both bias and harming to the country itself.
